My name is Jared Paventi and I am the voice of Al Dente. This, my friends, is a blog about eating. I’m not a foodie. I’m an eater. I like nice things and eating nice places, but the dining experience is more important than the label on the box or the sign on the door.
By day, I’m the chief communications officer for a regional non-profit based in Syracuse. By night, I’m an eater
foodie, gadget nut, husband, father, and an addict of The Weather Channel.
I was raised in Liverpool and have called Syracuse home for my entire life. While I was in high school, I was part of a revolutionary experiment called hj magazine. This was when newspapers had staff and money to do these sorts of things, and LONNNNNG before cell phones, the Internet and other distractions. For about six or seven years, the big distraction each Thursday was when free copies of hj were delivered to the high school. I got to be part of that. It was my first taste of writing and dashed my parents’ hopes that I would become an accountant like my cousin Tim. Anyhow, my work has appeared in the now defunct Herald-Journal, The Virginian Pilot, The Yomiuri Shimbun, and on the Associated Press wire, USAToday.com, Livestrong.com, eHow.com, and Syracuse.com, among other outlets.
I hold two journalism degrees — a bachelor’s degree from St. Bonaventure University and a master’s from Syracuse University — and was thiiiiiiis close to a dual bachelor’s in history. Stupid Greek civilization class. Anyhow, The Wife, The
Baby Kid (both proper nouns) and I live in Syracuse’s western suburbs, mere minutes from a Wegmans and 13 miles from Trader Joe’s.
Unless otherwise noted (in most cases), all photography is original and mediocre. I may shoot with a flash because the light in my kitchen stinks. Anyhow, I shoot with a Canon EOS Rebel XSi with Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens or 50mm f/1.8 lenses. Photos from restaurants are typically shot with an iPhone. Very little editing is done in Apple’s Aperture; primarily cropping, resizing, white balancing or exposure.
